National Apprenticeship Week – Meet Sam

How has your apprenticeship experience at Taylex Group helped you develop practical skills that you can apply in your chosen field?

Working as Taylex Group’s Admin and Finance Assistant has allowed me to develop skills in an office environment. I have developed my communication skills, including telephone manner and customer service skills. I’ve dedicated time to work on courses and putting theory into practise with the team, customers, and suppliers. Working in admin and finance involves a lot of problem-solving and organisation, as well as learning how to effectively use Excel and Accounting software.

What do you find most valuable about the mentorship and guidance you receive from Taylex during your apprenticeship?

At Taylex Group, there is always a member of the team available to help me with any questions I have; when working in such a fast-paced industry, it’s a real help. Having senior management and a skilled team who are knowledgeable in their individual fields is great – I have been able to naturally pick up an understanding of events and exhibitions through day-to-day conversation, by being involved in and taking notes during operations and finance meetings.

Working on the Jude Bellingham and Adidas project was my first experience being on-site for Taylex Group, so it was eye-opening for me to see the results of all the team’s efforts come together.

Can you share a specific project or task you’ve worked on during your apprenticeship that has challenged you and helped you grow both personally and professionally?

Working on the Jude Bellingham and Adidas project was my first experience being on-site for Taylex Group, so it was eye-opening for me to see the results of all the team’s efforts come together.

My role involved me speaking to the client on the phone to put them in touch with the right department and customer service while on site.

It was interesting to be there supporting the team, from being involved at the start of a project through to being on-site to watch the build. As it was for Adidas and Jude Bellingham, who I’ve watched play football on TV, being able to meet him in person was a standout moment for me.

In what ways do you believe your apprenticeship has prepared you for the demands and expectations of the workforce in your industry?

The experience I’ve gained in time management working in admin and finance will benefit me all the way through my career. Learning how to effectively use Excel and other software is a foundation for my job role. I understand the importance of knowing the responsibilities of all the departments for quicker problem-solving.

In an admin role I am sometimes the first contact with a client or supplier, either on the phone or at the door, so working at Taylex Group has prepared me to be professional and efficient.

As an apprentice, what advice would you give to other young individuals considering apprenticeships as a pathway to entering the workforce and building a successful career?

Apprenticeships are a great way to get first hand industry experience. From the start, the work you do has an impact and learning on the job from an experienced team allows you to advance in the sector you work in and make a great start to your career. As a bonus, you get paid for your work so you can start saving for your future.
