Our Managing Director Trevor Pearson recently did an interview covering his time in the exhibitions industry and how things have changed during a career in the sector which spans over 40 years!

TELL ME ABOUT THIS SECURITY PASS.

I was tidying up a little while ago and found my very first NEC security pass, issued in 1977.

WAS THIS WHEN YOU STARTED THE EXHIBITION & EVENT INDUSTRY?

No. After leaving school I did a five-year engineering apprenticeship and worked in the sales department for that company. Part of my job was to organise all promotional activity and I soon found that the world of exhibitions was so exciting. So, as a naïve 23-year-old, I decided to join a midlands-based stand contractor, and that’s how my journey began.

AND HOW DID THIS LEAD YOU TO TAYLEX?

In my early years, I worked for two large, full-service companies and one top quality design & build contractor. I learnt a lot from all three companies, and I decided that I could do this on my own. I formed Aston Display Limited in 1983 and enjoyed 36 years of producing some stunning work and working with some amazing people. In recent years, ADL and Taylex helped each other out on a number of projects and it seemed a natural progression for us to merge.

HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED IN THOSE 43 YEARS?

Well, I’m slightly less naïve now thank goodness. The industry has changed beyond all recognition and is now better structured and far more professional. The principles of providing a platform for like-minded people to communicate with each other are the same; the difference now is that the industry uses the latest technologies and materials to achieve this.

ARE THERE THINGS YOU MISS FROM “THE GOOD OLD DAYS”?

Certainly, the characters. I have worked alongside some tremendous people; some of whom are sadly no longer with us, and I have some great memories of the early years. There were times when major contracts would be sealed with a handshake over lunch, but this couldn’t happen now. The approach to events now is far more professional. Designs are constantly evolving, and everything is geared to the visitor experience. Every project that Taylex produces is designed through the eyes of the visitor.
